Trains Are The Key To Happiness
Downtown is a beautiful area with all of its restaurants, boutiques, and the quaint little park nestled in the heart of it an this is where today’s story takes place. I will even set up the cast for you. Me, I am here on this fine late summer day, enjoying the smells and reading my book. The protagonist is Gary, he is a friendly gentleman who just wants someone to talk to about the train.
As I sit reading my book for my class I love the day, although it has not hosted any dramatic events today it has been swell nonetheless. I am on the last page and getting ready to pack up an
d ride back to school and this friendly voice says “what cha' reading?’ and proceeds to sit down. At this point I have one of two options; I can get up and say a book for class and be on my way. Or I can stay in my seat and say oh hello there, it is a book for school? I choose the later of the two, which allowed me to engage in a conversion with this pleasant man. This was the best choice I made all week. So we proceeded to talk about school for a few minutes, but you could tell that is not what he wanted to talk about. What he really wanted to talk about was the train that was going to come by at 12:24 on the dot. So that is what we did, Gary told me everything he knew about the train. His knowledge was limited but that wasn’t the point. The fact is he was really excited to see the train coming by. You see he was from the coast and didn’t get to see the train very often so for him this was a treat. As for me I hate the darn thing, it always gets in the way of traffic and brings everything to a halt. To me this train was a pest that I wanted terminated. Obviously there is no way I would tell my new friend Gary that. What kind of heartless, half-witted human being would I be? No, so I kept talking to Gary about the train and asked more questions. He got very excited and I began to like the train myself.
How simple of a thing is that, a train? Gary got excited about a train, oh and did I mention that he doesn’t even get to ride the train? Well he doesn’t! He was excited to just see a train. After thinking about this for
awhile I realized how awesome that was. I mean I don’t take joy in a train I overlook it every day. But not Gary, he is pleased with the simple things in life. Things I take for granted. If Gary was this excited about seeing a train imagine his enthusiasm when he gets to ride one.
Gary made my day wonderful, he showed me to take life slower and live a little bit simpler. I won’t ever forget that day Gary got excited about the train. I hope to start looking at the simple things in life and being thankful for them. Because of Gary this is something I will strive to do everyday.
